The Safety Platform is coming to EHS management systems soon.

Converging trends indicate a future for EHS management systems that will be based on the Safety Platform. The Safety Platform model for EHS is the merger of the Democratization of EHS with the disruptive business success of the Platform model. While Uber replaces taxis and Airbnb disrupts the hotel industry, the time is now for the Safety Platform to start disrupting the status quo for global EHS management.

Democratization of EHS is already becoming a dominant organizing principle for companies that strive for world class EHS performance. The value of EHS to corporations will not derive from the current model of experts owning the content and pushing it through a pipeline business model for delivering EHS value added to an end user. The future of EHS value in an organization will derive from the connectivity of all end users interacting in an EHS space engaging in EHS value-added “transactions” - giving and taking the exact amount of EHS expertise needed so everyone has access to exactly what they need to work safely, exactly when they need it and the acquisition of the safety value turns into data for management to analyze and create curated improvements.

The converging trends of Democratization creating this shift to a Safety Platform model for global EHS management systems are:

Employee engagement in an EHS virtual space is gathering recognition as the mission-critical EHS management tool

• The ever growing need for instantly globalizing EHS expertise
• The universality and power of handheld interconnectedness
• The development of the interconnected workplace, and technologies to monitor and report data in real time generating Big Data which is generating intense growth of data driven safety management

The demographics shift to millennial dominance in the workforce driving “just in time” needs for exactly the right information at exactly the right time, along with acceptance of social style interconnectivity.

Democratization of EHS is already becoming a dominant organizing principle for companies that strive for world class EHS performance

The ability for real time “big data” to produce functional predictive EHS metrics, machine learning, and Artificial Intelligence combined with the explosive growth of Virtual Reality systems and Augmented Reality systems to gather EHS data in real time and generate immediate response and interaction tools and services.

All of these trends converge to predict and drive the Platform business model for EHS management systems where EHS value is derived from social connectivity enabling Core Interactions that generate positive Network Effects.

Over the next 20 years, as millennials demographically dominate the workforce and management ranks, corporate EHS excellence will increasingly be driven through the Safety Platform model. Early adopters of the concept will take the lead over less agile competitors. This suggests that EHS executives should start planning and building platform management systems based on social style connectivity for both the analysis of EHS function and delivery of EHS expertise, while trusting total employee empowerment and engagement to generate the value added.

EHS professionals will shift from pushing expertise through a pipeline, to understanding the trends based on interactive transactions, with responses derived from the user’s patterns and preferences and most importantly, curating the core EHS interactions for accuracy, simplicity and engagement with the new generation of global workforce.
